Profitable Networking, Predictably

by Wendy Kinney
03/17/08

When you attend a networking event, you know that acquaintances will ask, "So, what's new?"

Have a profitable response ready! Be prepared to tell a story showing you’re working effectively.

Want to generate even more benefit? Prepare three answers.

When Chris says, "So, what's new?" you present prepared profitable answer Number One. "I just signed a ceiling-busting contract with a Fortune 100 company. I am so excited about how this positions my business, I can’t stop grinning."

Kim joins you, and as conversation continues she asks, "So, what's new?" and you let Chris and Kim hear prepared profitable answer Number Two, “I'm reading Mind Your X's and Y's. One of the changes I've made is adding our client's picture to their completion certificate. Personalization is important, and it's so easy with a digital camera."

When Pat joins the circle and asks the predictable question again, you have a chance to give answer Number Three, “I just got back from the Association of Association Executives Conference. The hot new way to build community is blogging. Do you have any blogs you read regularly?” Now Chris and Kim have heard three reasons to introduce you to prospects.

If you responded to, “So, what’s new?” with the cliché "Oh, you know, busy-busy-busy," tells networking acquaintances their referrals are unwelcome right now, you're exhausted. But saying "I just locked in a dream client" positions you as credible businessperson.

Go ahead, make networking profitable. Predictably.
