Neworking Etiquette is Different

by Wendy Kinney
November, 2007
Networking etiquette rules for adults are different from those for children. So go ahead, interrupt!

Children are taught to wait until they are spoken to before speaking, and not to interrupt. Those are not the rules for adults!

Adults who always wait for someone else to introduce themselves first are considered aloof. And private conversations don't belong at group events - use these three tools to interrupt:

First eyes, then teeth, then words.

Make eye contact. Even from across the room this lets someone begin to pace their conversation.
Smile. This communicates that you're coming for them.
Now words. Skip the lie "I don't mean to interrupt."
Simply say, "I want to introduce you to..."

Three tools: eyes, teeth, words. Use them to shape your future.
